I had the very special privilege to hear a fairly well known apologist recently.  He was speaking on the reasons behind why the church is losing its youth and young adults.  After the first presentation she was asking about material for kids.  As is my wont, I suggested the book Living Loud by Norman Geisler and Joseph Holden.  This is an outstanding book written for high school age kids, though my 5th grade son is able to understand and process the ideas it presents.Pillars-of-Creation

For those who don’t know, Norman Geisler is one of the most brilliant Christian apologists alive today.  His book Christian Apologetics is a standard text at University and Seminary.  His in a skilled debater often on the front lines defending the faith against skeptics and atheists.  Yes, he had that unfortunate feud with Licona, but his scholarship in apologetics is nevertheless brilliant.

So what is the facepalm in this? (more…)

Moses: God, please, will you tell me where it all came from?

God: Well Moses, about 14 billion years ago there was this singularity, and…

Moses: Uh, Lord?  What’s a singularity?

God: Ok, take all the mass in the universe and compress it down to a quantum point, then…

Moses: Quantum?

God: Hmm, never mind that.  Let’s try…

Moses: By the way, Lord,

God: Yes, Moses?

Moses: Is “billion” bigger than “a lot?”

Any reader that has a young child will realize that the above conversation is not sarcasm in the least.  I have had more than one conversation with my overly inquisitive and too-smart-for-his-own-good son that is eerily similar to this.  It also comes to the heart, in my opinion, of the recent debate over Genesis I have been following over at The SciFi Christian.  (more…)

The last 25 years have been hard for the atheistic worldview, in my opinion. Not on the biological front so much as from the cosmological perspective. Also note that I say the “atheistic worldview” not the atheist personally. For most atheists I’ve known, their position – regardless the claim – is one held by faith rather than reason as much as most Christians. This is sad, since if you actually study history, theology and science, Christianity is a most reasonable position.

The Cosmological finding of the last quarter century certainly lend, at best, a great deal of credence to a theistic worldview and the Judeo-Christian one in particular. At worst there is a marked convergence between some of the cosmological tenants of atheism and Christianity that should provide pause for the atheist. That’s what I want to think about here. (more…)

My Path to an Old Earth

I guess the easiest way of giving a synopsis is to review where I was having issues with the YE model. It actually started studying the OT and was primarily the two accounts of Gen 1 & 2. I just couldn’t buy into the documentary hypothesis, so the Gen 1 account being an E source and Gen 2 being a P source seemed, for lack of a better word, lame. Passages like Psalm 19 and Romans 1:18-25 were also giving me problems because their teaching of natural revelation did not align with with what I saw in Gen 1.
