Where Is the Good SciFi?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I seem to find myself in a bit of a conundrum of late.\u00a0 I got a wonderful Christmas present this year; a fairly substantial gift card for Books-A-Million.\u00a0 Unfortunately, after spending nearly an hour perusing their Science Fiction section, I threw up my hands in frustration.\u00a0 Is there <b><i>anything<\/i><\/b> worth reading being published today?<\/p>\n<p>While this is admittedly something of a rant, I am asking this in true sincerity.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>You see, I&#8217;m an old school science fiction fan.\u00a0 I cut my teeth on Asimov, Niven, Heinlein.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll find plenty of people like Simon Greene, Poul Anderson, Philip K. Dick, Anne McCaffrey, Robert Silverberg, Harry Harrison and their contemporaries also in my library.\u00a0 I even have one of the better collection of English translations of Perry Rhodan on my shelves.<\/p>\n<p>However there is a remarkable shortage of more recent work in my collection.\u00a0 Certainly there is David Weber and his Honor Harrington series, though it&#8217;s gotten a bit draggy.\u00a0 David Drake is still around, who is also in the Weber-esque Military SciFi sub-genre.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve noticed a similar problem with fantasy, as well.\u00a0 Who has stepped up to take the places of writers like Fritz Leiber, L. Sprague deCamp, Roger Zelazny, David Eddings or Stephen Donaldson?\u00a0 Yes, there&#8217;s Robert Jordan&#8217;s just finished Wheel saga, but he <i>is<\/i> dead after all and I can&#8217;t help but wonder if that&#8217;s the only reason that story managed to get finished.<\/p>\n<p>After looking along the shop&#8217;s bookshelf, I can&#8217;t help wondering how many F&amp;SF fans under age 30 have even heard of any of these writers?\u00a0 Actually, I can&#8217;t help wondering how many under 30 understand the concept of an original story?<\/p>\n<p>Yes, I&#8217;m getting a bit cynical here, but what I find loading the shelves is justifiable cause.\u00a0 Generally, it comes down to two categories.<\/p>\n<p>First, I find lots of stories targeted for teens these days, leaning heavily towards fantasy.\u00a0 Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Twilight and the numerous copy-cat efforts.\u00a0 On the one hand, I will admit it is good seeing kids reading again.\u00a0 On the other hand, in my high school years, my friends and I were reading The Foundation Trilogy, Fritz Leiber&#8217;s Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser or Moorcock&#8217;s Elric saga when not arguing the finer points of Tolkien.\u00a0 A bit of a shift in depth, frankly.\u00a0 Yes, we were a bit nerdy, but we weren&#8217;t anything <i>that<\/i> exceptional.<\/p>\n<p>The second major class of stories in the bookstore?\u00a0 Well, let&#8217;s see&#8230; Star Trek stories.\u00a0 Star Wars expanded universe ad nauseam.\u00a0 Dragonlance.\u00a0 Marvell or DC universe novels, which are neither science fiction <b>or<\/b> fantasy.\u00a0 What is the common thread, here?\u00a0 These are all stories in someone else&#8217;s sandbox; nothing truly original.\u00a0 At one time such stories were commissioned works like Alan Dean Foster&#8217;s Star Trek adaptations or invitation-only collaborations by established writers as is found in Robert Lynn Aspirin&#8217;s Thieves&#8217; World.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Teen fic and fan fic.\u00a0 Are those really our only choices?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>This is where I can use your help.<\/p>\n<p>I could really use some suggestions on what might be worth reading.\u00a0 I have a real itch for some <i>great<\/i> science fiction, but I won&#8217;t thumb my nose at a top notch fantasy story.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll even offer something in return.\u00a0 If there is an interest, I could discuss some of the old classics.\u00a0 Have you read Lord Valentine&#8217;s Castle, The Stainless Steel Rat, Ringworld or Flow My Tears the Policeman Said?\u00a0 I would love to introduce a new batch of fans to some of the older works.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"pd_a_6891036\"><\/a><div class=\"CSS_Poll PDS_Poll\" id=\"PDI_container6891036\" style=\"\"><\/div><div id=\"PD_superContainer\"><\/div><noscript><a href=\"https:\/\/polldaddy.com\/p\/6891036\" target=\"_blank\">Take Our Poll<\/a><\/noscript>Perhaps &#8211; and I say <b><i>perhaps<\/i><\/b> &#8211; this might even make a good podcast; Classic SciFi Review?\u00a0 That would depend on whether I could find someone willing to work with me on such a project.\u00a0 It&#8217;d be a great excuse to re-read The Chronicles of Amber or Riverworld.\u00a0 I even have a few possible <span style=\"text-decoration:line-through;\">victims<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration:line-through;\">conscriptees<\/span> co-hosts in mind.\u00a0 If there&#8217;s an interest, of course.<\/p>\n<p>So please!\u00a0 Give me some suggestions in the comments.\u00a0 Also feel free to write me at raul@thechristiangeek.net.\u00a0 I need ideas for my gift card.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I seem to find myself in a bit of a conundrum of late.\u00a0 I got a wonderful Christmas present this year; a fairly substantial gift card for Books-A-Million.\u00a0 Unfortunately, after spending nearly an hour perusing their Science Fiction section, I threw up my hands in frustration.\u00a0 Is there anything worth reading being published today?
